The Marathon Continues

In 2010 I first saw Nipsey Hussle on the XXL Freshman list and wasn’t very familiar with his music. Cole and Sean were dominating the mixtape circuit and I didn’t give him a fair shake. At the time they were labeling him the new snoop Dogg and as a hip hop head comparisons are a huge turn off. The next time Nipseys name hit my radar was 2013 when he released the 100 dollar mixtape. It gauged my interest. I had to know more so I started my research. I found myself intrigued by the business mind and vision he had to help the environment he was raised in. This guy wasn’t just a rapper or a rolling 60s gang banger. This guy was an entrepreneur that would make a difference in the world. Fast forward to 2018 and all the pieces have started falling in place for Nipsey. He owned the worlds first smart store in the heart of his city. Nipsey was employing his friends and family to keep them off the street and see the bigger picture. There was so much focus on the youth to provide an alternative to gang culture. He really was south centrals savior. Finally, the music was starting to match. Nipsey dropped arguably the album of the year in 2018 (even earning a grammy nod) and he walked us right through his life in a way only he could. The pictures painted on Victory Lap are incredible. Everything was starting to make sense. Who else could have the gang bangers, the back packer, and the suits rocking the same music and drawing inspiration?… Unfortunately, on March 31, 2019 we were reminded…. They kill our kings right in front of us. Nipsey would be shot down in front of everything he built. When I got the news I was devastated. I’m not one to be emotionally attached to celebrity deaths or do the social media “like” grab… But I felt like I lost a friend and a mentor. All the things we say we’re going to do for our families and people we love when we get rich… Nipsey was sacrificing everything to do it. The interviews are now bone chilling… he never swayed. He practiced what he preached and died under those same principles. When Nipsey was gunned down he was meeting a friend who had been away for 20 years so he could get him clothes and have him fresh to see his family. It happens that quick. Although Nipsey is physically no longer with us he will live forever. Thank you for the memories, the gems you dropped, the things you did to better this world. I’m glad we got to take this Victory Lap with you….. but
